Isotopes of Lead

List, data and properties of all known isotopes of Lead as well as radioactive decay products and intermediate products.

 

Lead isotopes

All atomic nuclei of the chemical element lead are summarized under lead isotopes; these consist of an atomic nucleus with 82 protons and in the uncharged state of 82 electrons. The difference between the individual lead isotopes lies in the number of neutrons in the nucleus.

In nature, the chemical element lead occurs in the form of 8 different isotopes: 4 stable nuclides (lead 204, 206, 207, 208) and 4 radionuclides (lead 210, 211, 212, 214).

Of the stable nuclides, the isotope Pb-204 is considered primordial. The other three stable isotopes of lead are the end products of various decay chains and therefore only formed over time:

 

* Lead-206: end nuclide of the uranium-radium series with the starting nuclide uranium-238,
* Lead-207: end nuclide of the uranium-actinium series with the starting nuclide Uranium-235,
* Lead-208: Final nuclide of the thorium series with the parent nuclide thorium-232.

 

Due to their short half-lives of 22 years and less, the four natural lead radioisotopes can only be detected in traces; they form the intermediate products of various radioactive decay processes.

All other lead nuclides are unstable and decay, emitting radioactive radiation.
