Chemical oceanography deals with the conditions and interactions between organic and inorganic compounds and the biological, physical and geological conditions in the sea. The interdisciplinary scientific branch also studies the interactions of chemical systems with the marine organisms, the atmosphere, the rocks and the sediments and the changes caused by oceanic mixing processes.
The basis of this observation is based on the distribution and dynamics of chemical elements and isotopes and molecules. This ranges from basic physical, thermodynamic and kinetic chemistry towards the interactions of marine chemistry with biological, geological and physical processes. This includes both inorganic and organic chemistry as well as studies of atmospheric and terrestrial processes. In addition, the Chemical Oceanography processes that occur on a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
The marine chemistry deals with the chemical composition of sea water; it is therefore a special field of water chemistry. As part of the hydrosphere, the chemical oceanography also deals with aspects of atmospheric chemistry, geochemistry, the biosphere and environmental chemistry.
