A chemical element is a substance which is not separable by chemical methods, which meets to compounds with other elements and which can be isolated from these again by chemical operations.
According to another definition, a chemical element comprises the totality of the nuclides (species of atomic nuclei) having the same number of protons and thus have the same atomic number. An element - and its isotopes - have defined atomic weights.
The elements are abbreviated to an international agreement with specified element symbols.
